PILOT TRAINING PROGRAMS 2026
Pilot Training Programs 2026
Empowering creativity. Building independence. Changing lives.
In 2026, Handmade for Change will launch a series of pilot training programs designed to help individuals — including immigrants, unemployed/under-employed, people with disabilities and those in recovery — develop marketable, sustainable skills for income generation.
Our goal is simple: to teach practical artisan skills that can create micro-enterprise home-based businesses leading to living wages and economic independence.
Sewing & Textile Design
Participants will learn how to create high-quality handmade products such as aprons, home décor items, and accessories. Training will include:
- Operation and maintenance of sewing, serger, and embroidery machines;
- Pattern-making, cutting, and finishing techniques;
- Researching market trends and finding inspiration;
- Quality control and small-scale production;
- Using upcycled, repurposed, and sustainable fabrics; and
- Negotiating with clients.
Candle-Making for Practical Uses
This course focuses on crafting candles that meet real community and market needs — from bug-repellent and home décor candles to products for real estate staging or gifts. Training covers:
- Wax types and safety practices;
- Scent blending and wick selection;
- Pouring and mold techniques;
- Packaging and labeling for sale; and
- Negotiating as a vendor and fulfilling orders.
Jewelry Design & Local Materials
Students will explore jewelry-making using both traditional techniques and locally-sourced materials, including natural stones and repurposed metals. Training includes:
- Basic wire work, beading, and finishing;
- Design principles and quality presentation; and
- Creating product lines for different markets.
Business & Marketing Skills
To complement hands-on training, participants will also learn essential entrepreneurial tools:
- Quality assurance and customer service;
- English literacy especially for business;
- Internet, web design and computer basics;
- Setting up online stores (Etsy, Faire, and website platforms);
- Product photography and social media marketing; and
- Financial management and pricing strategies.
Outcome
By the end of the program, each participant will graduate with a market-ready product collection and gain the confidence to sell independently or collaborate through our Handmade for Change online marketplace. Handmade for Change is also working to develop partnerships with retail outlets and potential clients.
Our vision is to transform creativity into self-reliance — one handmade skill at a time.
